Winner 2017
The World Press Photo of the year is one of a series of pictures the Turkisch photographer Burhan Ozbilici made of the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov. The quite shocking picture shows how Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, a 22-year-old off-duty police officer, holds up his pistol in triumph, after he shot the ambassador at an art exhibition in Ankara. Altıntaş wounded three other people before being killed by officers in a shootout. Ozbilici was at the exhibition by accident and witnessed and photographed the shooting and what happend afterwards.
