Contacting government agencies (Tax Administration, Municipality) is increasingly often done via the internet. For example, while online, you can sign your tax return form, apply for child benefits, or request a Citizens Registration Declaration with the Municipality. Very often, this involves confidential information. To protect your privacy, the DigiD signature makes sure that you are who you say you are. In other words: DigiD makes it possible to verify your identity, and/or to prevent other people from trying to pass themselves off as you. For this, you need a DigiD code.
Who can apply for a DigiD code?
Everyone who is registered with a Dutch municipality can apply for a DigiD code. When you apply for a DigiD code, you will receive a username and password. You will then be able to use the online services of a growing number of government agencies.
