Coffeeshops

Although coffeeshops do sell coffee, cannabis coffeeshops also sell cannabis and hashish for personal consumption, which is tolerated by the local authorities. When you are 18 years or older, you can buy ready-made joints or stuff to make your own. There is no alcohol sold in the coffeeshops. You will find all kinds of people sitting around in a friendly ambiance. Using soft drugs is not forbidden, but dealing most certainly is!

Starting in 2013, a new law was introduced to prevent drug tourism. According to this law only Dutch residents are allowed into the coffeeshops. In practice, this means that from 1 January 2013 it is illegal for non-resident visitors to the Netherlands to use soft drugs, with the exception of Amsterdam. The Dutch cities close to the Dutch borders tend to be quit strict about this policy.
