Islam is a relatively new, but fast-growing religion in the Netherlands. Recent (CBS) statistics indicates that about 944.000 people (6% of the Dutch population) is Muslim. Islam numbers began to rise after 1970 as the result of migration of people from former Dutch colonies, such as Surinam and Indonesia, and migrant workers from Turkey and Morocco. During the 1990s, the Netherlands opened its borders to Muslim refugees from countries like Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, and in 2014/2015 to refugees from Syria, Erithrea and Ethiopia. Many of them are Muslims.
