Letters used to be a necessary mode of communication, and with that came a real craft: a focus on detail, on care, and on the way that writing by hand allows us to process our thoughts differently than typing ever could. The digital age has pushed letter writing aside, but the craft itself hasn't disappeared.
In Den Haag, the Brienne Collection holds almost 500 letters that have never been opened: undelivered, sealed, preserved exactly as they were written centuries ago. Before envelopes existed, the letter itself was folded and locked to protect its contents. These techniques are called letterlocking, and they tell us something about how much people valued the privacy and care of written communication.
Join us for a workshop exploring different historical letterlocking techniques.
You will learn three to four techniques and leave with a handfolded and sealed letter of your own.
