Discrimination

Every person in the Netherlands must be treated equally in equal circumstances. This is written in the first article of the Dutch Constitution.

Handy Dutch words and phrases

  • discriminatie - discrimination
  • gelijke behandeling - equal treatment
  • meld het! - report it!
  • slachtoffer - victim

Some examples of discrimination

  • You are refused an apartment because you do not have the Dutch nationality.
  • You experience problems with your employer because of your pregnancy.
  • You are refused entry to a nightclub, and you suspect it is because of your skin color.
  • A shop or public service is not accessible for people with a disability.

 

Reporting discrimination

If you are a victim of discrimination or if you have witnessed discrimination, there are people and organizations you can turn to. 

Discriminatie.nl

Discriminatie.nl is an independent antidiscrimination service in the Netherlands. You can contact them via www.discriminatie.nl or by phone 0800-0880. Their specialized employees will give you personal advice, and they can mediate between you and the other party and also assist you in taking legal steps. Their support is free of charge.

RADAR Eindhoven

For equal treatment, against discrimination. RADAR provides independent antidiscrimination services for the municipality of Eindhoven (and some other municipalities).
