Traditionally, Brabant was strongly Roman Catholic, but during the second part of 20th century there was rapid secularization both in Brabant and the rest of the country. Although considerably fewer people attend church, Roman Catholic traditions are still part of the culture. An example is Carnaval, which takes place five days before Ash Wednesday.
Today, there is a growth in the number of residents who practice Islam and other religions. There are places of worship that serve the English-speaking community, as well as services in Dutch that welcome internationals.
