Dental care

You can choose your own dentist (tandarts) and they do not need to be located in your neighborhood. 

Handy Dutch words and phrases

  • tandenborstel - toothbrush
  • tandpasta – toothpaste
  • tandsteen – tartar / hardened dental plaque
  • verstandkies – wisdom tooth

Generally, you will have a check-up every six months. Dentists perform most routine procedures, and anesthesia is usually only given upon request. Dental cleaning is often not part of the basic treatment.

Emergency dental care

For emergency dental treatment outside practice hours, first call your dentist. They will have an answering machine that will tell you how to contact the emergency dentist (spoedhulp tandarts).

Orthodontist and oral surgeons

Orthodontists and oral surgeons have waiting lists.

Insurance

Dental care for those aged 18 and over is generally not included in the basic health insurance package (although there may be some exceptions). You can, however, take out supplementary insurance to cover some of the costs.
