The type of local taxes that you pay depends on whether you rent or own the property you are living in. For more information about the various charges and payment methods, check the website of your local municipality.
Property tax (onroerendezaakbelasting/OZB)
Property tax is based on the value of the property (WOZ-waarde) as assessed by the municipality. WOZ stands for Wet Waardering Onroerende Zaken (Immovable Property Tax Act). This tax is paid to the local municipality by the owner of a property.
Dog tax (hondenbelasting)
Dog tax is payable in some municipalities if you own a dog.
Waste collection tax (afvalstoffenheffing)
Waste collection tax is collected by the local municipality for the collection, processing and disposal of household rubbish. It is usually calculated according to the number of people in your household, but in some areas it may depend on how many times you put your bin out for collection each year.
Wastewater tax (rioolheffing)
Wastewater tax is collected by the local municipality for the provision and maintenance of the sewerage system.
Water rates (waterschapsbelasting)
Water rates are collected by the local water board for regional water system management and water purification. The amount charged can vary per water board.
Note that you will also pay your local water supplier for your tap water usage.
