Handy Dutch words and phrases

  • afpersing - extortion / blackmail
  • bedreigen - threaten
  • gevaarlijk - dangerous
  • mensenhandel - human trafficking
  • mensensmokkel - people smuggling
  • onveilig - unsafe
  • schuld - debt / guilt / blame

Unfortunately, there are sometimes cases of labor exploitation or unfair, unsafe or unhealthy conditions. Examples of signs of exploitation include things like employees having to work long hours or do dangerous work. Violence, threats, and fraud often play a role in labor exploitation. Reporting labor exploitation

You can report suspected or actual cases of labor exploitation or unfair, unhealthy or unsafe working conditions (anonymously) to the Netherlands Labour Authority (Inspectorate SZW) using one of the following methods:

  • On the online portal of the Netherlands Labour Authority. Other languages are available - see the Dutch website of the Netherlands Labour Authority
  • By telephone - call the Netherlands Labour Authority on 0800 - 5151 (from abroad: +31 70 333 56 78)
  • Via the Inwonersplein counter of Gemeente Eindhoven where employees are trained in recognizing situations of labor exploitation
