What do I need to do?
Municipal registration
You need to register with your local municipality so that your details can be entered in the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen or BRP) and so that you can be issued with a BSN.
If your employer is an IND recognized sponsor, and you live in one of the participating municipalities, you (and your dependents so long as they are also EU/EEA/Swiss citizens) are eligible to complete your municipal registration at the Expat Center. This is beneficial as you will receive your BSN either immediately or within 5 working days rather than within 30 working days. Otherwise, you need to register at your local town hall.
Note: If you are staying for less than 4 months, you can register in the non-residents record database (registratie niet-ingezetenen / RNI) rather than the BRP. You can only register in the RNI in certain municipalities, including Eindhoven.
Health Insurance
You need to take out health insurance within 4 months of arriving in the Netherlands.
IND
You are only required to register with the IND if you previously lived legally in the Netherlands as an EU citizen and the IND ended your residency. Find out more on the IND page Registering with the IND as an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen.
Family members who are not EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
If you have a dependent (spouse/partner and/or child) who is not an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen and they will be staying with you in the Netherlands for more than 90 days in a 180-day period, they will need to make an appointment at the local municipality for their BRP and BSN registration, and an appointment with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for the relevant processes, including their residence permit.
If your family is only visiting you for a short visit (less than 90 days in a 180-day period) they will need to apply for a Schengen visa for the purpose of tourism at the Dutch embassy in the home country or the country where they legally reside. Whether they need a Schengen visa depends on their nationality. For more information about the residence permits check the IND website.
